Deep thinks. Hurt brain. So now for something simple.
I just want to wish a “Happy Otherversary” to my wife, Brenda. We met on the evening of January 10th, 1998, at an office Christmas Holiday party.
Yes, the party was late by a good three weeks or so. Our party planners didn’t get the funding approved until after all of the suitable venues were booked, so we had the party on January 10th. (We weren’t the only ones. Another television station in town had its Holiday Party that same night.)
So… how exactly do you meet a co-worker at an office party?
She worked a day shift in the accounting department, and I worked the night shift in news on the opposite side of the building. We had technically been co-workers for five months, but had never spoken.
As it happened, we both had dates for that party. But two days before my date — who had not returned my calls in over a week — confirmed that she was dropping out. As coincidence would have it, Brenda’s date ditched her on the night before the party. So we both went solo…
…and we left together. Our first official “date” was the next night. But I will always consider January 10th as our “Otherversary.”
There’s more to the story, which will be highlighted in a book written by a friend of mine. He’s highlighting about two-dozen couples who met in the broadcast industry, and he’s found their stories to be fairly quirky and interesting. He interviews each spouse separately, then pieces the “real” story together like any journalist would.
I’m sure there are far more interesting quirks than mine… but if two people hadn’t removed themselves from the equation in that way, two other people wouldn’t be here today:

Happy Otherversary, my sweet.
(Now, for all of you out there… please comment with your Otherversary story. How did you meet?)

Great story and beautiful photograph!
I met my sig. other … believe it or not … in the fifth grade.
We didn’t start dating until high school, but the rest is history.
We met online, so typical for a blogger (who wasn’t a blogger at the time). We met for our first date (coffee) on Labor Day 2000 and haven’t looked back since. 🙂
Kami, I seem to recall that our first meeting was also over coffee…
It’s a trend that usually doesn’t lead to marriage 😉
