Flight Tracker
It’s great to be home for a while… no extended travel anywhere on the near horizon.
That’s a good thing, as I’ve got kids’ birthdays to worry concern happily conjure in July and August. It’s also a good thing because I almost got used to living out of a suitcase.
I knew travel would be an issue with the new job. Enough of an issue that had it been offered a year earlier, I wouldn’t have accepted. The kids are a little older though, and remember me when I come home. Mostly.
I added a little feature to the sidebar. Each of these icons represents a flight I’ve been on since January 1st. Thirty-one of them since the start of this blog. At some point, if I get really bored, I’ll add roll-over effects that give you information about each specific flight. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

A Custom Scoop of Goodness

I’ve known the people at CustomScoop for a few years now. Jen and Chip (and the others who have been part of the Media Bullseye Roundtable, like Doug and Sarah…) They do good work, and have been among the few who have provided real thought leadership in emerging communications, without succumbing to hype. It’s fair
Shifting Sands Are Shafting Brands

I had a lovely vacation, and returned with a couple of lovely thoughts about communicating from solid ground. You know, the wise man built his house on the rock, the foolish man built his on sand (or wrote in the sky.) While there are many facets and layers to this, they all boil down to

Thanks to the internet, any crank with access can write something that spreads. If you’re managing the reputation of a brand, the factor working in your favor is there is so much material being published that it is the rare message that cuts through the clutter. But how do you recognize it before it starts

Usually, I have a good idea why people come to this site. I use the free Sitemeter tool to track hits, and as I generally have low traffic and no ads, that’s decent enough for me. Sitemeter tracks the last 100 visitors, and let’s me know (among other things) the page they hit, how long
Shaking things up

It was time for a new look. I liked the old look, but there was something about the old “old look” that was missing. Yet, the “old” old look lacked several features. This look will get some tweaking in the meantime.
Swine Flu Newsrooms Spreading To You

One of the great things about connecting with others online is the chance to be part of some interesting discussions. Such was the case of a conversation I recently had with Andrew Fowler, one of the principles at Newsvetter in Portland. He was concerned about the lack of truly relevant information parents were getting about
Is it time to close the barn doors?

Honestly, it’s a question that doesn’t get asked enough. “Is it time to shut down this site?” I’m not so much concerned about content and direction for my writing; indeed, I am happy contributing within niches elsewhere. It’s my question about the format itself. I write, I share, I communicate through several media now. I

The issue here was a plugin, one that tries to minimize the load on servers by relying on Javascript libraries housed at Google. The “Use Google Libraries” plugin needed updating, and that new version arrived tonight. We will return you soon to pithy quotes and unusual perspectives. (Provided you have a computer monitor compatible with
More WordPress Weirdness

I have diagnosed part of my problem. The QuickRSS plugin I had active on my site was not playing nicely with the built-in RSS fetch in the WordPress 2.8 administration panel. I deactivated the plugin, and that problem is solved. However, I still have no access to the visual editor.
Temporarily Vanilla

I just upgraded to the new version of WordPress, and for now, I recommend you wait. Something funky is going on in the background, so for the time being I bring you Retro-Occam. Plain vanilla theme, plain vanilla plugins.
