		<description>Wow! A voice of reason on the Internet about Social Networking!  There are legitimate reasons for being anonymous and being transparent - and often the two exist in very different places.

Political blogging and forums,  and Medical blogging and forums (both professional and personal) are great examples of places where anonymity would be preferable due to prejudices in a given society.  And, in some cases, danger to life and limb.  (In some places, not only can your political beliefs get you into trouble, so can having certain diseases.)

It is amazing to me that anyone would think that complete transparency is a good thing.  Those tend to be people who know nothing of history.  But, that is the majority of the population.

I agree that avoiding &quot;meanness&quot; downgrades many arguments. At the same time, what do you do when someone spouts gratuitous insults that are personal and completely off topic? 

Ignore them? Ban them from your network? Or attempt to engage them politely?</description>
