I remember the same words that Jason Falls remembers, but I know that the rest did not resemble your kids' version. I think Bat Girl was in the second verse.

Evan, Wikipedia is the second part of the double-whammy here. There will still be organic flow of the song on schoolyards, but now we'll likely not be able to track the evolution because "wiki-thority" has rubber-stamped a definitive version.

I'm thinking beyond "Juvenile Jingle Bells," as there could be any number of examples. Is this the Wisdom of Crowds, or the Tyranny of Crowdsourcing?

All I remember is...

Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin layed an egg.

The reason that's all I remember is my perverted friends and I used to write gross-out lyrics to parody everything and what we wrote for that, frankly, isn't fit for children ... or your audience.

Heh.

I remember it (from the mid-80's) just as you have it posted here. It's worth mentioned that one of the reasons your kids are singing it may be because one of the kids cable networks (Cartoon Network maybe?) is using it in their promotion of their Batman cartoon. I've seen the spot running for a week or so now, and it also uses the version of the lyrics listed above. I'll look for it over the next few days and post the specifics of who's using it where.

I am interested to hear more about the origins of it. In this digital era, it's often easy to track down the origins of a specific meme, but in the pre-digital era, it's much more difficult.

Anyone else?
