When my family began talking about making Christmas Dinner the December after my mother died - we discovered no one else in the family liked the Waldorf Salad (her recipe).
So for the first time in my 28 years of life, we did have to make Waldorf Salad for our Christmas Meal.

Mom told me to make her clam chowder, she drains the juice from the clams, and rinses them in cold water. She then discards the juice.

I made it last week for my husband. He tasted it and said it didn't taste clamy enough. He asked if I used the juice. After reading a few other recipes, I found that all of them called for adding the juice AND in some cases even more.

Guess mom just doesn't like her clam chowder clamy.

My grandmother cooked from scratch. Our favorite dish was her macaroni and cheese. Imagine our surprise when we found out that she just transferred the frozen Stouffer's dish into her own casserole dish. Of course, I continue to believe that no one can make a better macaroni and cheese dish than Stouffer's and I still associate it with my grandmother.

...of course, there will be a follow-up piece; both to the trip, and to the lessons learned.

Feel free to steal this as a meme, though.

"What 'lesson' did you once take away from what was really an atypical first impression?"
