Whether one simply survives. or whether one is splendidly successful. is subjective at any rate.

To simply survive in some parts of the world is thriving, as that all there is.

Only the strong survive applies only to third world countries, and inner cities these days.

Leaving us with a very diluted pool of humanity.

I believe if someone with no talent, initiative and similar means becomes a success, they would admit that luck, or being in the right place/right time, was a factor for success in their life. Conversely, someone who had the means and took actions to succeed (created his/her own luck) might (rightly) not acknowledge luck!

So I must say that I am a little lucky!

Ike, indeed, though I still contend that’s the attitude one who doesn’t have luck in her/his life may contend. Do you think the lucky person dwells on the obvious and existent equity you describe?

Adam, I acknowledge the role of luck in the process. You just can’t dwell on the inequity of luck. Life isn’t fair.

Ike, seconded on that front, and thanks for the feedback — yes, agreed. But I’d also like to cast my vote for the injection of “luck” into this life equation as well…you know those old sagacious types who marshall the young troops into form, complimenting them for their talents, but also entreating them to believe in the influence of luck in the process. It’s not all about brains, alas. I have to remind my young charges here in the Czech lands about that as well.

Maybe this one was more of a “miss” then…

The sentiment is that we live in an age where many people get away with self-destructive behaviors that would have weeded them out of the gene pool — while at the same time, others struggle to survive in the biological and economic sense.

Living to be 50 in some places is routine, and in others it is remarkable. Just pray that we always recognize each day for the miracle it is…

Having just read my comment — I’d have to add that the late Jan Masaryk — son to Tomas Garrigue Masaryk and Charlotte Garrigue, the latter’s US-born and raised spouse — had a knack for putting things into the simplest of terms. He could communicate to the average Czechoslovak (in its time, Blessed Be Its Existence and Name) citizen, without TGM’s blowhard-like ponderous philosopher-king style.

In other words, forgive the opacity, if any. No umbrage intended…

Isaac, this doesn’t particular sit well with me, and I hasten to add this is hardly because you’ve neglected to encapsulate the idea succinctly…rather…

Survival is not the same as thriving. And if success = thriving, then I don’t agree with your what you’re positing.

Unless you’re saying that success is the same as just “getting by” — simply because the prospect of earning well beyond one’s wildest imagination is nothing more than a cosmic “hit or miss” affair.

Though this isn’t what you’re saying, is it?
