There are also a number of people out there ready to tell you how you can earn money without doing anything of value. There are a number of variants on this - MLM, half the ads in Monster and Careerbuilder, 90% of the blog posts out there these days.

The common denominator is they invariably need for you to pay them for the opportunity to do this job, or you need to send in money for their free pamphlet on how to make money without adding value. If you send in the money, you've just received your first lesson...

I hate that there seems to be no negotiations between the two entities (the "seller" and the "buyer").

We will send you the cash.

Granted, if you aren't wearing jewelry, and you need cash, selling it is a great thing to do. But the best thing, is to shop around at jewelers. Call Jewelry stores in the area. Once you find the ones that will buy jewelry, you can hoof it and get estimates on how much they will pay for the pieces you are selling.

They might resale the piece outright, or they might melt down the gold and use it for other uses - repairs or even create new jewelry.

I have a platinum wedding band that I need to sell. And this is what I plan to do. For the record, it is actually my husband's ring set from his previous marriage. :-)

I was an investment adviser in a prior iteration, and people would always ask me what my latest hot stock tip was. My answer was always "diversify, allocate wisely, dollar cost average your input, buy & hold, and ignore CNBC."

I remember those commercials..."We'll send you a box, put your gold in the box, send it back, and we'll send you a check." Yeesh.

There's all sorts of anecdotes...my favorite is "A monkey w/ push pins randomly sticking them onto stocks on a wall outperform 95% of money managers"

Should people have gold in their portfolio? Yeah, a sliver...and it should probably be a slimming % as you take profits since gold has been on a serious tear for years.

I'm not sure about heading back to the gold standard. If that were to happen, I believe it would be on the heels of a catastrophic economic calamity. Then again, there's never been a historic situation where the world's economic leader has amassed trillions in debt and continues to charge away.

Why does the phrase "filthy lucre" come to mind? :)

I worked with a guy about two jobs ago who had lost $300,000 day-trading.

Yes, three hundred thousand dollars. He had to go back to work to pay his mortgage. If ever I were tempted to do it, I have Kieth's negative example to keep me from thinking about it too hard.
