The Turkeys on Your TV

I don’t mean to pick on Good Morning America because it’s bad. It’s not. In fact, it is the only TV news I regularly subject myself to anymore. They probably do as well or better than any of the other networks.

Which is sad, because what passes for news these days is not news, it’s wrong.

I can write some long posts, to be sure.

I now found a nifty little way to put summaries in the sidebar, up at the top right.

It doesn’t show up in the main view with multiple entries, but it does show up on individual posts where I have configured it.

And if you look at the main view, you’ll see that shorter entries like this one will display a little differently, too.

Firewalls and Fairness

Keith Olbermann has been suspended indefinitely from MSNBC, because he gave money to three Democrats who were running for seats in the House and Senate. Already, there is a big stink being floated that he is being targeted because he gave to Democrats, and that Fox News gave a million to Republicans, and it’s all a big conspiracy to keep the man down, and whatever.

Simmer down, and allow me to explain the real issue at play here.

Predictions About Predictions

escher-crystal-ball

Three-and-a-half years ago, I wrote a spoof about how analysis of mood and syntax on Twitter could be used to predict a woman’s likely moment of ovulation.

A year-and-a-half ago, I wrote a piece about how Google was assembling a significant-enough chunk of content creation and distribution, it would have a prediction engine that could intelligently mine for patterns, and maybe even pick stocks. (All that Google lacked was a micro-blog style service, like Twitter.)

And now?

Twitter Mood Predicts The Stock Market

An analysis of almost 10 million tweets from 2008 shows how they can be used to predict stock market movements up to 6 days in advance.

Give it a read. Actually, give them all a read.

People shape networks.

Networks shape people.

Back in 1990, my “PSC-352: Modern Political Ideologies in the Techno-Managerial Society” class had a multi-week project. We were to completely remake and reform Education in the United States. From the ground up. With no regard for sacred cows.

That was the mandate, and we had two weeks’ worth of class meetings (four 75-minute blocks) to do it. However, we had to work in self-selected teams, based on prevailing themes. [Read more...]

A gunman fired several rounds in a University of Texas library today. (I don’t think I have to recount the very sensitive issue with you… the rest of the media is sure to dredge up the story of the sniper in the tower.)

The interesting piece for me today is how technology changed both the event and the reporting of it. [Read more...]
